Key Facts

No DMV points

These are civil penalties, not moving violations. They add no points to your driving record and are not reported as moving violations.

The notice goes to the registered owner

The system photographs a rear licence plate, not a driver. Whoever the vehicle is registered to receives the notice, regardless of who was driving.

Reductions are required by the statute

AB 645 requires income-based reductions and payment plans. Where the operating agency publishes the reduced amounts, they are shown above.

Speed is not the only threshold

A citation is only issued at 11 mph or more over the posted limit. Below that, the system records nothing chargeable.

If you get a notice, you have three options

SFMTA sets these out directly: pay it, apply to lower the amount (or do community service instead), or protest it. Reduced amounts are 50% off for low-income drivers and 80% off for people receiving CalFresh, CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, CAPI or IHSS.
