Speed cameras in California

California allows automated speed enforcement only under AB 645, a five-year pilot limited to six named cities and running through January 1, 2032. Outside those six cities, a speed camera cannot issue you a citation.

What applies everywhere in California

  • A citation is only issued at 11 mph or more over the posted limit.
  • Fines run $50 to $500, set by the statute rather than by the city.
  • These are civil penalties. They add no points to your driving record and are not reported to the DMV as moving violations.
  • A 60-day warning period is required when cameras are first activated on a street.
  • Income-based reductions and payment plans are required by the statute.
